A heat pump is effectively a large refrigerator, that is trying to reduce the temperature of the outside air, and the heat that it sucks out of the air is transfered in to the pool water.

They work best in relativly higher air temperatures, and are very efficient as the small compressor pump uses only a small amount of power.

If used in conjuncion with photovoltaic panels to generate the power they require and the circulating pump the only cost is the initial captal cost to install them.
